Spirit in Business

Posted on: March 29, 2010

Right now the economy is in a period of adjustment. There is a major shift happening. And a lot of people are concerned. I think that the biggest issue is that we need to bring spiritulity into business. By spirituality I do not mean religion. (Religion should be kept out of business, except for when someone wants to take a religious holiday.)

What I mean by spirituality is respect and consideration. Recognizing the spirit in all there is. Awareness of the wholeness in life. Everything has an effect on everything else. This is a fact. For example, if a business lowers the pay of its employees, then the employees have less money to spend. If the employees have less money to spend, they will be more particular about where and how they spend their money. This means no extras, which in turn has an impact on other businesses. And so on. You know the old saying, “What goes around, comes around.” And so the economy changes. So the question is, “How can we change it for the better?”

Business began when people started to trade goods or services for other goods or services. These transactions were fairly simple. For example, one person traded an animal skin for a basket of fish. But as humankind changed, from being hunter gatherers to people who lived in civilizations, the nature of business changed, also. It became more complex.

As the complexity increased, the spirituality decreased. In many situations, people began to get greedy and exploit others. And most people put up with this for the sake of making a living. But things are beginning to transform. There are more options available. More and more people are developing the tools and skills to better their lives. And people are realizing that business does not have to be devoid of spirituality in order to make a living.

It begins with self empowerment and motivation. You need to ask yourself, “What do I really want?” and “How can I make it happen?”
